Ruth Kluger-Aliav – The Last Escape

Ruth Kluger-Aliav – The Last Escape
English | eBook | Size: 58.70 MB

The Last Escape is the true story of how just ten people managed to save the lives of many thousands of Jews who would otherwise have been doomed to die in Hitler’s concentration camps. Told in the first person, the book describes the desperate and exciting adventures of Ruth Kluger herself. A beautiful and determined young woman, her part in this secret operation has made her into an almost legendary figure.

With incredibly meagre resources, Ruth Kluger overcame unbelievable obstacles–finding shipowners willing to lease ancient vessels at a premium; cajoling sailors into working the leaky boats; calming passengers confined to a few feet of a darkened, airless hold, sometimes for weeks on end; bribing border officials, stationmasters, harbormasters and embassies; and at all times raising money. And in the midst of all the turmoil and danger, she even found time for a beautiful but tragic love affair.

Ruth Kluger (1910-1980), not to be confused with author and Holocaust survivor Ruth Kluger, was a Ukrainian-born Romanian and an Israeli Jewish Zionist activist, assisting in the Aliyah Bet both before and after World War II. After Israel’s independence in 1948, she was public relations manager at ZIM, the Israeli shipping company. At David Ben-Gurion’s suggestion, she took a new Hebrew surname, Aliav.
