Recommendations:
I strongly recommend going through the video course first. The video course is incredibly comprehensive and is far more refined and developed than the book, and even goes into more techniques and depth than the book does. Plus it has better structure.
The book has some issues, but is still ripe with practical advice and strategies. I’d recommend using both, but put more emphasis on the video course. Go through the video course first, use that as your structure for your learning strategy, then pick out what you can use from the book.
Important Notes:
Speed Reading does not work! Even Scott has recanted speed reading on his website, which is a major component of both the video course and the book. Please do not waste your time trying to develop speed reading skills. You will get nowhere. (If you want evidence for this, look up Thomas Frank’s video The Science Behind Reading Speed on YouTube).
I recommend taking the solid advice from the reading section, while dumping the speed reading section in favor for Mortimer J. Aldler’s How To Read A Book (available on this site). The book offers the single greatest strategy for reading books intelligently that I have ever seen.
And finally, I recommend using Dominic O’Brien’s memory techniques instead of the ones he mentions in the course. I don’t blame Scott for including only the basic techniques, since the point of the course is to avoid memorizing, but I think it’s an important skill to have at your fingertips.
I recommend using Dominic’s two books You Can Have An Amazing Memory and How To Develop A Brilliant Memory. Both of which are on the site. Dominic is the 8-times world memory champion for a reason.
