This course is aimed at students learning English as a foreign language (upper-intermediate or advanced level) who love literature and would like to improve their English skills using short stories. The course focuses on three short stories: The Lottery (Shirley Jackson), Taste (Roald Dahl), and The Facts of Life (Somerset Maugham). I have included a PDF of each story in the resources for this course. In each story, we analyse different vocabulary and grammar, and in particular we focus on tenses and prepositions. The course also includes three lectures on typical mistakes made by EFL students, in order to help you avoid those errors which are common among foreign learners of English.

1) The Lottery (Shirley Jackson). This is a dark tale of a strange and savage ritual that takes place in a small village in a rural part of the USA. We analyse how tenses are used in this story, and we also cover a lot of phrasal verbs.
2) Taste (Roald Dahl). This is a short story about deception at a dinner party. We analyse the prepositions in this story and memorize a large number of adverb collocations.
3) The Facts of Life (Somerset Maugham). This story is about deception, luck, and adulthood. We analyse more prepositions, but we also go through conditionals, complex gerunds, and perfect modal forms.
By the end of the course, the learner will have an excellent grasp of the complex vocabulary and grammar that is necessary to form the kind of sentences that a good writer uses in a work of fiction.
